Saturn in Virgo: the transit, the return, the natal placement

What Saturn in Virgo asks for

Saturn is the planet of responsibility, maturity, limits, structure and time. It takes about 29 and a half years to go around the zodiac and spends between two and three years in each sign. Virgo is the earth sign of skills acquired by repetition, of analysis, organisation, service and health. Vedic astrologers call Saturn the servant, which makes Virgo a natural home for it: concentrated effort, no short cuts, and a strong interest in comparing, correcting and purifying whatever is in front of it.

Saturn had last been in Virgo thirty years earlier, in 1977 to 1980. Whole-grain bread and bran additives became the norm then, as the food industry tried to put back what refining had removed. The forecast in 2007 was that this time the correction would go a step further, back to raw and organic ingredients rather than fortified white flour.

The forecast, and what happened

The 2007 forecast named three Virgo themes for the world: the quality of food, with recalls and rising grain prices; healthcare, with the system under examination; and shortage, since Saturn represents lack. Food recalls did arrive, bread prices did peak, organic produce moved from specialty shops into supermarkets, and schools took soft drinks off the menu. The healthcare debate ran through the entire transit in the United States. The theme the forecast did not name turned out to be the biggest: the financial crash of September 2008 and the austerity that followed, which is Saturn in Virgo in its plainest form. Less of everything, counted carefully, and a long audit of what had gone wrong.

What it means personally: the house
