I hear a question about the cusps, and which sign I am often. Here are the basics. Astrologers use an ephemeris to find the positions of each planet. An ephemeris is a book of tables that lists the positions of the planets once a day. That is what the original Greek word meant: daily. The dates used in horoscopes reflect the normal dates for these changes. The Sun moved into Leo, July 22, 2008 at 3:55 AM in PDT. In England , the time was 8 hours earlier, July 21 at 19:55 and in Sydney Australia it was July 21 but the clock was showing 9:55 AM. Astrologers calculate personal horoscopes for both time and place. However, when reading a horoscope column having been born July 22, in Vancouver BC , you might not know if you are a Leo or a Cancer Sun. (Check those dates for 2008 and 2009)
Your Sun will be in one sign only, either at the end of Cancer or beginning of Leo. The difference in terms of the energy is big. At this point, you would need to know your birth time. If your Sun is at the end of a sign, in the final degree (each sign is divided into thirty degrees), you would feel driven to excel at something and the characteristics of that sign would be something you own fully. If you were born when the Sun had just entered a new sign, your Sun would be in the first degree, actually zero degrees and some minutes. This would mean that the energy of that sign would feel unfamiliar; you would have to learn to express it in this life. Let's assume that your Sun is in Leo by a few minutes; you might feel uncomfortable being the centre of attention, not wanting to be showy, and throughout life, you would encounter situations where you would have to be up front leading others, getting them enthusiastic, etc.

Aries March 20 -April 19
Use that creative energy to make work feel fun. You are rather innovative now, what would you like to change—do differently or do better. If you have been thinking about changing your diet, getting rid of ‘bad' habit or getting into shape, August is an excellent month to launch these kinds of changes. Attention to detail may be somewhat lacking now, avoid rushing when sending off important communications, setting up bills online, etc. You might be in mood to shop (read splurge); however, plan purchases rather than just charge it.
Taurus April 19-May 20
August is all about family and home; spending time with those nearest and dearest—perfect for a holiday. 2008 is filled with detours, distractions and the like, to test your determination to stay on course. It is a year of change, trying out new things, which means venturing into the unknown and away from the safety of status quo. Pay attention to those grand ideas and think about how you could accomplish them. Amidst of it all, you want to create more space and have a ‘grander' home now, but within a realistic budget; meaning compromise and tough choices.
Gemini May 20-June 20
Acting fast to seize opportunities—are you willing to do that? You want more out of life and this month you can feel more ready to throw caution to the wind. We make choices every day; these alter our lives, as does the decision not to choose. August and November are significant months for Gemini. External events may bring in new responsibilities or obligations, the need to renegotiate mortgages, acquire a loan or make room for someone in your home. Amidst it all, you are busily handling all kinds of paperwork, communication and working toward getting resolutions to outstanding issues.
Cancer June 20-July 22
Are you expressing your views and needs with clarity? Relating and compromises are a prominent theme this week. Then there are distractions… can you stay centred? This week is filled with drama, action and challenging but potentially liberating choices. Our expectations may be unrealistic, which doesn't mean we cannot attain our goals or aspirations, rather that we need to adjust them, not toss out our ideals. Your partner is likely to surprise you this week or perhaps together you make a daring decision. Remember to stay calm when expressing your opinions and views.
Leo July 22-Aug. 22
It is important to keep those dreams alive! We begin by dreaming bigger, and adjust based on our experiences in life. It is somewhat a topsy-turvy week, and your expectations may be met with resistance. There are other routes, keep the enthusiasm and choose based on what you desire not merely what is most prudent. We create our reality; this week choosing to focus on any perceived lack or having an attitude of ‘cannot be done' makes that your reality. Thinking that I will find a way, and I can do this makes that your reality. August is a month filled with choices.
Virgo Aug. 22-Sept. 22
Act quickly in order to take advantage of opportunities that present themselves. This can be challenging, as you need to rely on your instincts while being considerate of the views and opinions of others. Stay extra alert in traffic and pay attention to hazards; for example, balancing on a wobbly chair while changing the light bulb is potentially hazardous. If you are dealing with health issues, the energies in the sky this week, support alternate modalities in healing. Ultimately, we are in charge and need to make those choices, when it comes to our own well-being; the role of health care professionals is to advice.
Libra Sept. 22-Oct. 23
What to do when faced with a choice between three or more equally valid options? While potentially feeling somewhat irate, wanting quick action—isn't ours an on-demand world. Should you simplify or search for more options? It is either or this week; and we need to choose. However, until the weekend, your thinking may not be as sharp as usual. The plus side of that is that your intuition is finely tuned. At times listening to our inner dialogue serves us better than relying on common sense alone. It's that kind of week.
Scorpio Oct. 23 – Nov. 20
How quickly can you shift gears and head toward a new direction? Can you be flexible and truly trust your hunches? You know you need to feel enthusiastic about any pursuits in life; and if that inspiration has waned, you need to decide how to rekindle it. Ideas are dime a dozen, the question is, what you are willing to do to create reality with them. While your mind is racing in many directions at once, you are pulled in two opposing directions by family and colleagues/co-workers. What did you choose a year ago—do you still want that?
Sagittarius Nov. 21-Dec. 21
The week can be rather exciting; it can be distracting and the test is whether you can remain centred on who you know you are, and what you know you want the most. There is incredible enthusiasm and excitement in the stars, but also the cold ‘shower' of reality. We can choose to go for it or decide to ‘play it safe'; when making your choice, think about whether life is a journey or simply a trip to a preordained destination. Many of our answers to pressing questions are imbedded into casual, daily conversations, if we merely listen.
Capricorn Dec. 21-Jan. 19
There is emotional intensity in the stars, which affects both your work as well as your personal expression—there is drama in the air. You will be thinking big and may have a tendency to exaggerate. If travelling, pay extra attention to your surroundings; and double-check any related insurance policy. This is a good time to review important financial statements, investments, etc. We are in action mode, and there is almost too many things demanding our attention, thus our usual attention to detail tends to get lost in the hustle and bustle of life.
Aquarius Jan. 20 - Feb. 18
If you are being accommodating, doing things for others and lending a helping hand, you are in perfect alignment with the message of the stars. On the other hand, it is all too easy to feel put out by others or feel that you are being taken advantage of. Our attitude is a choice, and ‘our harvest' is based on what we choose. The week is also excellent for investigating all kinds of financial matters, paying attention to the details and making educated choices about how to invest/save/conserve your money.
Pisces Feb. 19 - March 20
Do your feel excited about what you are doing, or do think that your creative input is not valued? Remember, that in order to receive encouragement from others, you need value your own input. Take a step back and look at what you are creating around you, whether it is something concrete or abstract. We are amidst a year of big changes, and all of these begin with an idea about the changes we'd like to see. Staying centered and focused amidst all the action is what keeps us on track. Naturally, this is easier said than done.
