Leo Horoscope 2006

Year Ahead

Leo July 22 - August 22

Mars in Taurus 10 th house and Fixed cross 1, 4, 7, 10

The 10th house is where we deal with authority figures starting with the parents, and continuing through bosses and governmental bodies. It is also the house of career and status. This astrologically speaking, represents the best we can be in terms of contribution to our family, community, country or the world. This is the house that astrologers view with care to determine our worldly success, our climb on the corporate ladder or the ladder of life experiences. Taurus is a steady climber, preserving status quo and desiring results and rewards in the fullness of time. During this time, we need to learn how to improve what we have accomplished, work solidly toward attaining new rewards and goals, and putting our best foot forward. Naturally enough, this can also be a time where the dissatisfaction that has built up over time demands that we instigate changes so that we can have a career/status or avocation that feeds our inner goals. Taurus, however, does not make impulsive changes, but explores and contemplates its options with more care.

Until late Summer of 2007, Saturn continues his travel through your Sun sign, which can take the wind out of your sails. Responsibilities and obligations are the monikers we assign this taskmaster. Any chronic health issues need to be addressed and steps taken to improve your vitality. This influence gives you the fortitude to work toward your goals despite any potential setbacks. The climb needs to be steady. Home matters and relationships are also important this year. Doing it all with grace takes a little extra effort. These are the kind of times, when we alter our lifestyle-a new residence, job, forming partnerships or maybe a new family member comes on the scene.

New Venus in the 6th house

This year begins with Venus retrograde in Capricorn. It has been so since Christmas Day and continues until February 3. As I mentioned in last year's column this repeats from 1997-98 and 1989-90. Each of the five Venus cycles is akin to the hundred-year sleep in fairy tales. When the cycle connects with our charts, we have profound revelations and changes in our lives.

During these Venus times, we have weeks on end to ponder whether we are happy and content with an area of our lives. Capricorn is a sign of tradition and likes it when things are done in a manner society expects. If you ask for something you need to finish off with please; when you get something you say thank you and if you made a 'blunder' you immediately say excuse me-a little simplified, but just to illustrate the point. Capricorn can be the scorekeeper of the Zodiac, merits and demerits each get a column. In terms of the pearly gates, we are told that Saint Peter will be on hand to check over our accomplishments and shortcomings.

The sixth house represents how and where we hone our skills, practice what we have learned and are of assistance to others. It is also the house of sickness and health. If you have already made positive changes in these areas, you are looking after your health, doing physical exercise and have made strides at improving communication with co-workers and people in your daily life, life can be wonderful, putting a smile on your face as you perform your tasks and chores. If, however, you have held on to old ways of doing things, out of obligation and necessity, then things are likely to start shaking up. This commenced a while back, now it merely intensifies. We are supposed to love what we do and be happy with the compensation, or learn to love what we do. We make strides in our lives to pursue way to eke out an income and to establish an avocation or calling that fills that innate need within us. Ideally, these two are the same, but that is seldom the case. This is the house where we encounter the issue of 'been there, done that, got the T-shirt' and now it is time to move on. Venus wants our heart to sing with joy, and if that isn't the case, then it is time to make it so. Anything that falls short of being worth it needs change. More about Venus in the annual write-up.

North Node in 9-3 shifts to 8-2

The 9 th house holds concepts such as higher knowledge, foreign travel, religion and our views on life. This house represents the area of our lives where we philosophize about life and life's mysteries. This influence prompts us to expand our horizons by venturing out there to learn something new about the part of life that does not exist in the familiar neighbourhood of our daily existence. We question our existence and seek knowledge. This is not faith for the sake of faith, or because that is what the doctrine states; this is where we develop our belief system. Politics are firmly held opinions thus belong to this area of our lives. This is where we make our initial connection with the world at large; the stage where we share that connection is the 10th house. So many inter-weaving cycles, and now is the time to learn to connect some of those dots, remove those proverbial 'blinders' and review and revise our views. The other side is to do with our familiar daily routines, which for now take a back seat.

Mid-2006 this axis shifts into the money houses-theirs and mine. Investments, retirement planning, the resources of spouse or partner are likely to grow now. Learning to spend wisely is the intent; the allure is to satiate those whimsical needs for the gadget of the month. The most intimate of our relationships are also in for some changes. We may crave to simplify our lives and eliminate any redundant issues and even people from our lives.

Mercury Rx in the Houses of Endings

The Mercury cycles are in water and repeat from, 2000-01. We had the ideations of Air, the pragmatic work of Earth, the inspiration of Fire and now with Water, we get to look at how it makes us feel. No matter how great an idea, unless we feel emotionally comfortable with it, we cannot act on it. Our world functions on 'facts and figures', logic and practical action. Now we are asked to explore a side of our innate nature that does not seem to fit well into the equation-the function of Mercury to do deductive reasoning. Are you comfortable with how life is flowing in these areas? What is it we need to eliminate from our thinking, and daily routines?

The first Mercury period begins February 8 and ends April 12 (repeats in 2007). The stage for his performance is the 8 th house, which correlates to the area of life where we encounter commitment to others, inevitable issues of life-death, taxes and elimination. We change dramatically in the course of our lives in this area. The shifting cycles periodically bring this portion of our life into the forefront. This is the house of joint resources and property, inheritance and insurance. Let's look at the elimination process as an example. If your septic field has ceased to function, calling the tanker guys in monthly is a band aid solution, the existing field needs to be removed and a new one put in its place. The human body is the same; we can only apply band-aids for so long. When something has ceased to be of value or importance, it is no longer mutually inclusive-then it needs to be gutted and redone. Committed relationships fall here as well, time to renovate, rejuvenate and to stay completely honest and open. House of secrets perhaps, but some of these we cannot afford to keep. It is also the time to ensure that financial matters are in order, wills and insurance is up to snuff and that you continue to grow your shared assets and resources. For the heads up refer to the Mercury column for 2006.

July-August is the second Mercury period for the year. It affects the 12th house of your solar chart, which is a private and intimately personal area of life. This is the house where our baggage from the past has relatively free reign. This is where we face or ignore our fears, become intimately acquainted with our insecurities and often fail to recognize our innate strength-isolation, solace and respite from the hectic pace of our lives. The subconscious mind and our dream world belong here, and when the cycles activate this area of our lives we need to (re)address some of these issues. It is also the segment in the annual cycle that defines the process of ending a period so we can launch a new year starting with our birthday about a month away. The energy of Taurus is practical, no nonsense and filled with strength. The normal month long cycle does not apply this year nor next; now you need to do deeper level work on the issues described by the 12th segment of the chart, as listed or illustrated in this paragraph. Might as well get out the notebook in order to record your dreams, the next step, of course, is to get a dream dictionary or a book of symbols. Our collective set of symbols varies little between cultures, but the essence of symbols remains about the same. When we dream of cooking, we are creating sustenance, and a nurturing atmosphere. When we dream of the Ocean, it is to do with emotions. Learn about your own nature and coping mechanisms by paying attention to your dreams.

The October-November Mercury period brings family matters into heightened focus. The 4th house represents our home, family and our roots. It represents our need for security in terms other than money-what is it you need in order to feel safe? The people of your home are those with whom you share an emotional bond, where your love is as close to unconditional as we can get. On a mundane level, this can be a period of renovations, moving or big shifts and changes within family. Children may leave the nest or move back in. This is the area of life where we look after those we consider family. Now it is time to stand on your own two feet and make practical choices in order to move forward in life. At this time, you may find yourself contemplating your view of yourself as opposed to how you think others see you. At the minimal, this is the time when you spend more time in family type activities than normal, maybe even the time you think of starting one.

Other notables

Over the next two years (July 2005-September 2007), Saturn will meet up with your Sun. The Sun is your vitality, ego, the engine that drives your life. This can force you to become more responsible and mark a time when your vitality is low. It's important to ensure that you are looking after your own well-being. The first few days in the 2-year cycle give you a preview-the hints are not in cat size letters-so pay attention. Saturn rules bones; knees and ankles in particular, are you getting enough calcium? Does your back keep going out of alignment? Do you need to visit the chiropractor or simply think that it will go away on its own? Saturn represents both limitations and rewards for effort-are you doing your best or merely coasting?

1975-77 babies have Saturn in Leo in their natal charts, and will be coming of age in the next two years. That's right, Saturn returns at age 30. In astrology, we call that coming of age-you need to assume responsibility for your own actions. To some it comes naturally and others find it the absolute pits. Saturn is the milestones marker. If you are celebrating or commiserating your 30th or 57th birthday this year, Saturn was in Leo the day you were born. We have a realizations regarding our mortality and accomplishments (or lack thereof) at age thirty, in our late fifties (57 is the norm) and the final one just prior to our 90th birthday if we live long enough. What is that realization--indeed, what have you done with your life thus far? Where to and how from here? Saturn represents the obligations we feel are ours, our responsibilities toward others and where we need to grow to be mature, productive members of society.
